To help determine the purpose for this class, Honors Literature and Civilizations II, I interviewed a few people on their definitions of Literature and Civilizations. These are the responses I received back:

Nick Shea-21University of North Carolina Junior
“Literature- a written work that has received positive critical review or a work done with a more serious undertone and meaning. Civilizations- any group of people living in the same general area that share customs or traditions or ways of life."

Ashley Maffit- 19 TCU Sophomore
“Literature- writing that is formed and usually passed down for the purpose of entertainment or to gain knowledge and civilization is a group of people that literature can be written for or read by.”

Alyssa Shea- 28 Grad Student at Clemson University
"Literature is the written word that build a moment in time, a religion, or a nation. It must to used properly and with great care or else can be considered a petty, worthless thing unworthy of thought or remembrance. Civilization is a term we contrived to display how evolved a population was at a point in time. It was overused as a term, in my opinion, and lost some potency."

In class, we concluded that there are no correct or incorrect definitions of these words. Instead, they are subjective and are dependent on the context of the situation.
